Advent is a time of waiting: We are waiting for Christmas, waiting for shared experiences with loved ones, waiting for favorite family traditions, waiting to sing Christmas carols, waiting for the wonder on the faces of children on Christmas morning, waiting in lines at stores…we are constantly waiting during the season of Advent. Ultimately though, we are waiting for the inbreaking of God, our Savior, coming into our world, into our experiences, into our lives in the presence of Jesus, the baby in the manger. We are waiting for this baby, for this miracle, for this gift from God to us.
This Advent is about waiting for me personally as well, Pen and I are waiting for a long hoped for and prayed for miracle, waiting for new life that grows inside me, waiting for additions to our family and for the love that will grow from them. As I wait this Advent for the birth of twins, I feel overwhelmed by the details of being a parent of multiples, yes, but more than that I feel, truly blessed and cared for by my God, my refuge, and my strength. The children for whom we wait were created and formed by God. They are a miracle, a wonder, and a gift.
The Psalmist describes waiting in silence, and I would hope we could all find time for silence this Advent season. Among the hustle and bustle and the details and the checklists that this holiday brings, it is my hope that we find time for reflection, silence, and prayer as we center oursleves and remember what it is we celebrate and whom it is we are waiting for. God is our rock and our salvation, God is our refuge and strength, for God Alone we wait in silence.
Prayer: In God Alone, my soul can find rest and peace, in God my peace and joy, only in God my soul can find its rest, find its rest and peace. Amen. (#19 Songs and Prayers from Taize)
