Covenant

Welcome to Musings! As participants in the conversations on this blog, we covenant together that we will maintain a spirit of good will, of openness to each other, and of mutual respect in our discussions; that we will listen to each other and endeavor to understand each other, especially those whose views differ from ours; and that we will remember that we are brothers and sisters in Christ.

Why Musings?

  • The Musings Page will be a place to consider thought-provoking, evocative, sometimes polemical but not overtly political, writings, quotes, ideas, and poetry on the Christian life in all its facets: spiritual, religious, ethical, and practical.

Third Friday in Advent – Answer the Call

“Do not hide your face from me
in the day of my distress.
Incline your ear to me;
answer me speedily in the day when I call.”

Psalm 102:2

Everyone occasionally needs help or guidance.  Some don’t like to admit it but we all do.  We all tend to express things differently though.  Some cry out for help in a subtle way and others are obvious about it.  There is no shame in crying out for help and if someone does cry out to us we should not procrastinate in answering.  No matter what the occasion or mood we are in it is only right and fair for us to reply with our guidance or opinion.

If we expect our neighbors to help us when we are in doubt, distress, worry, or just need a friend, we should reply to their cry when they call to us.  We should always be listening and never distracted by our own personal problems.  Everyone occasionally needs help or guidance and we as God’s people should be the ones to answer their call.

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, please help us to always be aware of the people calling out around us.  Help us to never delay; to extend a hand to them, and comfort them in their time of need.  Please help us to never be distracted or tied up in problems of our own and to always put our neighbors first. AMEN.

Today’s reflection was written by Camille Tharpe, a member of the Middle School Youth Group at First Presbyterian Church, Shreveport.
