Covenant

Welcome to Musings! As participants in the conversations on this blog, we covenant together that we will maintain a spirit of good will, of openness to each other, and of mutual respect in our discussions; that we will listen to each other and endeavor to understand each other, especially those whose views differ from ours; and that we will remember that we are brothers and sisters in Christ.

Why Musings?

  • The Musings Page will be a place to consider thought-provoking, evocative, sometimes polemical but not overtly political, writings, quotes, ideas, and poetry on the Christian life in all its facets: spiritual, religious, ethical, and practical.

Third Saturday in Advent – Sing to the Lord

Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, His praise in the assembly of the faithful. Let Israel be glad in its Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King. Let them praise His name with dancing, making melody to Him with tambourine and lyre. For the Lord takes pleasure in His people; He adorns the humble with victory. Let the faithful exult in glory; let them sing for joy on their couches.

Psalm 149: 1-5

I can bet that as you sit down to read this, you have a Christmas tune stuck in your head. Christmas music began playing on the radio November 1st. Now it’s December 17th, and I have heard “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer” one too many times; however, I don’t consider that real Christmas music.

We are exactly one week away from my favorite day of the year- Christmas Eve. Would you like to know why? The music! They play “All I Want for Christmas is You” every hour on the radio, but they don’t often play “Silent Night,” or my favorite, “O Come, All Ye Faithful.” Just thinking about the songs and picturing all the candles lit on Christmas Eve while we welcome His birth together as a faith community makes me feel giddy and tear up at the same time.

We are preparing for the birth of Jesus Christ. What better time to rejoice? So sing! Dance! Do you think the Lord has a problem if you sing a little bit off key or if you’re not the most graceful dancer? Not at all, as long as you are making melody to Him. So take this moment, wherever you are – whether you are at work or at home on the couch – and praise Him with song and dance!

Hark! The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!”

Prayer: Please help guide us in our final week of preparation. May we be able to rejoice and praise Your name through beautiful music as we await the birth of the Christ child. Amen.

Today’s reflection was written by Lauren Rogers, Youth Director at First Presbyterian Church, Shreveport
