My dog, Delilah, has trip anxiety. When she was younger, every time the suitcases came out, she would begin to pace from room to room and person to person checking on everyone. Delilah was afraid that she would be left behind. On those occasions when we did not take her, she would go in the other room and sulk with her back turned on you and would avoid your gaze and call. On those other many occasions when she did get to go and the pacing became too much, Anna would say, “Go put Delilah in the car”. From the moment that Delilah was put in the car, she relaxed and patiently waited on the rest of the family for the adventure to begin.
The Holiday Season is like this. The suitcases are the stresses of the season – the parties, the pomp, the gifts, the cookies, the decorations, the expectations. We begin to pace and begin to sulk because we feel left out or left behind. What am I going to do, I have three parties this weekend! My neighbor has their lights up and I have not done a thing! There are not enough gifts under the tree! We avoid His gaze and the call because we are caught up in our own world and perceived needs and miss the bigger picture.
Psalm 145 states
The reality is that God has already put us in the car and we are waiting on the adventure to begin. The adventure begins with the birth of the Christ Child. So while others are stressing over the season, you can find peace in the fact that the waiting has begun, and God has made a special place for us.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us find that special place and be patient in this time of waiting. Amen.
