“…8In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see — I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: 11to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord…..”
Luke 2: 8-11; Read the full passage at Luke 2:1-20
After Carl and I read the whole passage from Luke together, I asked him if a certain part of it stood out to him. He thought for a moment . “The part about the shepherds. They were just out there that night, doing their job. They didn’t know yet that something really awesome was about to happen to them.” That made me think about it too. What otherwise could have been just a regular “night’s work” turned out to be the most extraordinary of nights for those unsuspecting shepherds. The angel chose them, the humblest of men, to first announce the birth of the King of kings. And although they were frightened, they went to find see the sign for themselves, and proclaim the amazing news.
As we quickly approach that special night ourselves, we can take a hint from those shepherds. Hopefully we won’t be too busy “doing our jobs” that we forget to look in readiness for the coming of Jesus. Unlike the shepherds, we already know of the “awesome” event that is about to take place. Let’s pray that we are ready- ready to proclaim it, ready to revel in it, ready to welcome the Light of the World once again into our lives.
Prayer: Dear Lord, we ask you help us set aside our worldly concerns this Advent Season and be ready to share in the wonderment and joy that is Christmas. Amen
