Covenant

Welcome to Musings! As participants in the conversations on this blog, we covenant together that we will maintain a spirit of good will, of openness to each other, and of mutual respect in our discussions; that we will listen to each other and endeavor to understand each other, especially those whose views differ from ours; and that we will remember that we are brothers and sisters in Christ.

Why Musings?

  • The Musings Page will be a place to consider thought-provoking, evocative, sometimes polemical but not overtly political, writings, quotes, ideas, and poetry on the Christian life in all its facets: spiritual, religious, ethical, and practical.

Second Tuesday in Advent – Holding Us Up

18When I thought, “My foot is slipping,” your steadfast love, O Lord, held me up.
19When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul.
Psalm 94: 18-19

In this psalm, God provides comfort and peace for the psalmist’s troubles.  Our Lord assures us both that that through His promises and the individual’s own experience that his troubles would end well.

I know, in my life, the Lord has indeed held me up when “my foot was slipping”.  How many times has this verse related to us?  The peril was upon us, we saw it, and it frightened us.  We concluded that nothing could be done; but then the hand of the Almighty intervenes.  We did not fail, we were held up by His mercy.

When we are distracted and worried about how we will get through the stress of the holidays, we must remember that the Lord will cheer our souls.  The promises of the birth of Jesus Christ, the risen Savior, and the coming of the Spirit should cause our hearts to leap with joy!  Often we are content with the satisfying or quieting of the heart and mind.  Our Lord wants us to not only be pacified, but experience the good will and joy.

Christ gave himself up for us and has hold of us all the time.  What greater joy is there?

Prayer: Dear Lord, May we take time to have a conversation with you.  My griefs, my cares, and my conflicts I will hasten to the Lord.  Your consolations will delight my soul.  Amen.

Today’s reflection was written by Brett Rowell, a member of First Presbyterian Church, Shreveport.
